Triangle Chapter

When it comes to the world of construction estimating, Will Hernandez has carved out an impressive career path that balances both technical expertise and a deep understanding of small business challenges. Having graduated from NC State in 2005 with a degree in Construction Engineering Management. He began his career as a field engineer with Blythe Construction before transitioning into estimating in 2010. Since then, he has spent over a decade honing his expertise in construction estimating.

"At first, it was just meant to be extra money for family trips & concerts … What started as a side gig turned into something that now replaces a full salary and involves my entire family.”

In 2017, Will took his experience and turned it into an opportunity by founding Farpoint Construction Consulting. Initially a small side project, Farpoint has grown into a full-fledged consulting firm that provides estimating services for small to mid-sized contractors who may not have the resources to hire a full-time estimator. His business, now a family affair, includes his wife managing administrative tasks, his daughter handling accounting, and his 16-year-old son learning the ropes of takeoffs and project estimating. Farpoint has expanded its reach nationwide, helping contractors from New York to Denver bid on and win projects, empowering them to scale their businesses effectively.

"I work with a lot of mom-and-pop companies where the owner is the estimator, the superintendent, the project manager—all in one. They don’t have the resources for a full-time estimator, and that’s where I step in.”

Will’s involvement with the PCEA stems from his desire to support and uplift professionals in the construction estimating field. He recognizes the aging workforce in estimating and sees organizations like PCEA as critical to fostering the next generation of estimators. As an advocate for the association’s mission, particularly in providing education and scholarships to those entering the field, he looks forward to more involvement in his chapter in the future. He believes PCEA can play a key role in bridging the knowledge gap and attracting young professionals to the industry.

Beyond business success, Will is dedicated to giving back to his community. His upbringing has shaped his belief in lifting others up and ensuring that students from underprivileged backgrounds get opportunities he never had. This spurred his involvement in training and outreach to those without access. His commitment to supporting both small businesses and young professionals reflects his belief in the transformative power of knowledge and opportunity.

Will’s journey in estimating reflects the evolving nature of the construction industry—one that requires constant learning, adaptation, and a willingness to support others. Whether through his work or his support of PCEA, he continues to contribute to the field in meaningful ways.
